I am a fourth year Arts Education student and pre-service teacher at the University of Regina, with a major in Dance and a minor in Literature. This fall, I am beginning my journey as teacher doing my internship teaching (and learning) in a grade 5/6 classroom. As an arts advocate, I plan to implement the arts in all subject areas as I believe the arts enhance and enrich student learning. A focus on the arts is central not only to my teaching, but my passion as I strongly believe providing opportunities for students to express creativity and imagination teaches them to take risks, solve problems and develop a sense of self. Through the integration of arts in my practice, I also hope to teach open-ended thinking and create an environment of questions rather than answers.
Throughout my internship experience, I hope to build strong relationships with my students as I believe this is important in order to create more meaningful and motivating lessons. Furthermore, I think this helps create a safe and inclusive environment for all to learn and share. I look forward to reflect on my learning and share my journey as a pre-service teacher through this blog.
